Mindful of the recent flooding in different areas of the state, particularly in Fremont County, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office today issued a reminder to parents and caregivers to exercise caution when children are, or might be, close by any body of water.
"I believe a little bit of prevention and care go a long way in this regard," said Sheriff Rich Haskell. "The Green River, of course, runs directly through the city of Green River and in Rock Springs we have Bitter Creek and Killpecker Creek. There’s the Black’s Fork west of Green River, the Ham’s Fork at Granger, and, of, course, Flaming Gorge, not to mention a good many smaller creeks and irrigation canals and ditches throughout the county. Kids at play are readily drawn to any body of water, and there’s potential for tragedy there."
As an example, Haskell pointed to the lost toddler found by a deputy along the Green River in Jamestown on May 29th after an intense two-hour search.
"It’s always a relief when we find a lost child unharmed," he said, "but we should always remind ourselves the next outcome might not be a happy one."
