Boating Season is here, so boat safe and boat smart!
- Wearable, U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFDs (Personal Floatation Devices) aren’t just smart – they’re the law. Ensure that your PFDs are in good condition.
- Children 12 years of age or under must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD when a boat is underway unless they are riding in an enclosed cabin.
- All persons aboard personal watercraft (PWC) must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD of a suitable size while engaged in such activity.
- File a float plan. A float plan needn’t be elaborate – just let a family member or friend know where you will be and your time of return. Include the names of those in your party and a good description of your boat. This person should be authorized to contact the Sheriff’s Office if you are overdue.
- Know and respect your boat’s load limits.
- Don’t take chances with the weather. If a storm is approaching, head in!
